A man I know likes to say, “Happy people are grateful people, and those that aren’t… aren’t.” In the years since I got sober, I’ve picked up a few practices along the way, and one of them is a gratitude list. A lot of people roll their eyes at this “good vibes only” kind of thing, and I get it. But two things can be true.
Ahhh what a perfect list and practice! We can never get enough reminders to pause in gratitude.
I have these three bangles that I never take off. I’ve started this new practice where every time I reach for them or play with them, I have to stop and focus my attention on three things that I have...it’s nice.
You have such a way with words. (Duh, it's why you're writer!) But I really liked "Days I will never have to live again." So so so so powerful. I loved your entire list and you've inspired me to think of gratitude in the "inverse" -- i.e., grateful to not have bombings outside my house and fear for my life, that I'm not sick, etc.

Emily, can I feel gratitude for another person's gratitude? Or is that too "meta?"
Because I felt grateful for what your gratitude journal brings to you.
Being grateful for "days I will never have to live again." I find that remarkably brave. Thank you for sharing the rawness of your courage.
