Thanks for the update Emily. On spatial matters, I'm entirely lost so I'm impressed with Nick's abilities. even more than if I had average spatial intelligence. I routinely get a very low percentile on those mental tests where you have to imagine an object rotated.

But I do remember how pleasing it was when our house was framed. It's a great step in the process.

Thank you David! It is such an interesting process. Often, when we have to make certain design decisions I have to be in the the actual space to get a feel for it, but he is able to look at the plans and see how it will turn out.

"Mind you, he isn’t a singer; it was just sweet pillow talk from an uncomplicated time in our lives." I LOVE THIS.

But also, I feel like I know Nick, because you've just described my father -- able to do just about anything with his hands. Has a full-time high level job but decided he would oversee adding a second floor to my childhood home. Decided one weekend that he and I would replace the wood floors in bedroom (I cried multiple times). Always game and always willing to do what his family needs and wants.

How am I just seeing this!? I love this insight into your father... I've seen those tears in the eyes of my older kiddos when he tells them "we need to do work on the house" Hopefully they will learn appreciate the time in the future.

Owner-builder here, too, a few times over (we built the house we’re in now in 2018-2019) so I know so much about what you’re going through!! My hubs is a general contractor (well he’s on a break right now & hoping he never goes back) and he would very much agree that those “plans” are never as set in stone as owners wish them to be. But the process of watching the framing go up is incredible!

I'm sure Nick daydreams about what it would be like to be a GC, but then he sees his friends dealing with feast and famine and all the headaches and I think he appreciates the stability of his job now

I want the story you want to tell most. Or maybe the one you least want to tell.

I'm even more impressed at the building of actual things now that I've seen the thing itself. It's a castle! love reading these updates, it definitely scratches an itch... must be why HGTV is so popular. Keep 'em coming!

HGTV is to blame for ALL of my crazy design wishes!

Thank you for sharing. I can relate to exactly what you’re going through. My rebuild was finaled in January 2023 after my ex husband who left a quarter of the way into our owner build told me I’d never do it. It took me almost four years, but I got it done.(I had the help and guidance from contractor friends.) I cried A LOT. The first rule of construction, nothing will go as planned. The second rule of construction, crying IS a part of construction. Good luck with your build. It will be unbelievably satisfying to get to the end.

I'm sorry I missed this when you first commented, but I'm so glad I saw it today since I was in tears this morning. Good for you for sticking with your build. I can only imagine how satisfying it was to finish.
