Wishful Drinking is one of my favorite reads of all time!!! You have to watch the HBO that she did of the same name. What an absolute genius and talent!!
I will have to check that out!! She had so much awareness around the weird life she had. I laughed so hard and immediately got sad... her light went out too soon.
I love this! And you beat me to a fav books list! Love, I'm Glad My Mom Died, and Wishful Drinking (I never LOLed so much from a book). I was wondering about the Britney Spears book and actually read through the reviews (a mixed bag of folks who said it was poorly written and not enough info about her and JT, and of course, many said it was fantastic).
Some of my favs include Take My Hand (not a memoir but historical fiction) by Dolen Perkins Valdez), What the Dead Know (by Barbara Butcher), and Walking with Sam (by Andrew McCarthy --> yes, '80s brat pack Andrew McCarthy!).
Walking with Sam is on my TBR!!! Such an interesting premise!
Britney's book was so good, besides the title and cover... which are terrible. I've been thinking hard about how we treated high profile women of the 90s and early 2000s So I was primed to question the popular narrative around Britney. I thought she was pretty vulnerable about her relationship with JT. It is FAR from a literary masterpiece, but so few celebrity memoirs are and I don't they always they need to be. It was very entertaining. If you're on the fence, check out the episode from Glamorous Trash. They really lay out the whole book.
In my next life, I want to have Ruth Reichl's writing voice and talent! I've read a few of the books on your list and know I have your list when I'm wondering what to listen to next. Thank you.
My favorite novel of the year is The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride.
This is amazing, thank you so much for sharing this. Also, I love your criteria for good books, I am the same way, I am not rigid about genre, the writing just has to be really good.
Excited to dive into Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow as I just purchased it. I love how you described Tom Lake, I’m glad I read it. I’ll definitely refer to this list in the future. Thanks for it.
