Hello friends,
I am never without a book or two on my nightstand, but in the last year or so I’ve become more intentional with my reading.
Last January I wrote a post on the blog called, “A Reading Life.” It was an idea I got from ModernMsDarcy.com where you write 100 things about yourself as a reader.
The kids and I sat down and journaled about the kinds of books we like and don’t like, where we like to read, and what time of day. It was a fun exercise and I’ve kind of been obsessed with the idea ever since.
This week on the blog I wrote about how now, my biggest problem is that there is Too Much Good Stuff!
Right Now
Swap Your Phone Time for Reading Time. (Book Riot)
I’m working my way through the Alphabet Murder series by Sue Grafton. I just finished C is for Corpse and I’m having so much fun with Kinsey Millhone. This letter to her readers had me in tears.
A conversation with two friends about the book Deep Work. (Long Story Short Podcast)
Sex-Positive Parenting for Prudes made me think HARD. (Cup of Jo)
For the first time since the summer of 2019, I went to the Santa Barbara Public Library!
A meditation on what is a “whole-body yes.”(The Tim Farriss Show)
Don’t be a Martyr to Grit.(NYT)
I hosted my book club this week. We read Bravey. It’s a memoir by Olympic runner Alexi Pappas and a really good story.
Just Finished
I just finished Shoulder Season by Christina Clancy and loved the story. It’s set in Wisconsin in the ’80s at a Playboy resort. I bought the book on that alone. I love books that teach me some obscure fact about history I wouldn’t know otherwise.
I worked in the restaurant industry in the early 2000s and found the scenes of drug use and sexual assault to be very believable.
I’ll admit the protagonist does bring nieve to a whole new level that might have you yelling at your pages, or in my case, shouting like a crazy person while running through the foothill mountains. But, the setting and story are so well researched and beautifully written that I didn’t care too much.
Should the author happen upon this mini-review, I would BEG her to write a sequel!! I’d love to know how Sheri lives out her life now that she knows the truth about her past. I’d love to read about a woman in her 60’s who is still growing emotionally and falling in love.
Until next time…
Here’s a quote to ponder, meditate on, journal about, or read and never think of again.
“Don’t surrender all your joy for an idea about yourself that isn’t true anymore.” - Cheryl Strayed
